“But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears.” – Zechariah 7:11 (NIV)
In a world of endless scrolling, meetings, errands, and daily demands, we’ve normalized noise and minimized warnings. We pride ourselves on multitasking, moving fast, and staying “booked and busy.” But what if that busyness is blinding us? What if we’re so occupied that we can’t see the flashing red lights God is placing before us?
The Dangers of a Distracted Life
When life gets hectic, we often ignore spiritual nudges. That uneasy feeling in your spirit. That scripture that hits differently. That dream you quickly forget when you wake up. Those aren’t coincidences. They are divine alerts—God’s gentle hand trying to get your attention before a fall, a loss, or a delay.
The enemy loves a distracted believer. Why? Because distraction weakens discernment. When we’re too busy to pray, too exhausted to read the Word, and too overwhelmed to reflect, we miss God’s voice in the chaos. We confuse productivity with purpose and fail to notice that we’re drifting further from the path He set for us.
Biblical Examples of Missed Warnings
• Lot’s Wife was warned not to look back. Her curiosity and disobedience led to destruction (Genesis 19:26).
• Samson ignored warning signs from Delilah repeatedly. His strength was snatched not just by her betrayal, but by his inability to pause and discern the danger (Judges 16).
• Even Martha was “worried and upset about many things,” while Mary chose what was better—sitting at Jesus’ feet (Luke 10:38-42). Martha’s busyness almost made her miss the moment of revelation.
Modern Busyness Looks Spiritual Too
Sometimes we hide behind our “spiritual busyness.” Serving in ministry. Posting scriptures. Attending every church event. But even ministry can become a mask if we’re not listening to God. Are we doing things for Him without being with Him?
There’s a difference between assignment and activity. One produces fruit, the other produces fatigue.
The Cost of Ignoring God’s Warnings
Ignoring God’s voice has consequences:
• Missed opportunities
• Prolonged seasons
• Broken relationships
• Financial losses
• Delayed purpose
God is merciful, but He’s also a just Father. He won’t force His warnings on a deaf ear. That’s why it’s vital to make space for stillness and reflection.
How to Tune In Again
1. Slow Down Intentionally – Make time daily to disconnect and hear from God. Even 10 minutes of stillness can change your spiritual trajectory.
2. Ask for Discernment – Pray, “Lord, help me to see what I’m missing. Reveal any area where I’ve been too busy to hear You.”
3. Honor the Red Flags – If something feels off, pause. Don’t rush past the caution signs.
4. Be Willing to Be Interrupted – Sometimes the divine warning comes through inconvenience. That canceled meeting, that delay, or that lost opportunity could be protection.
Final Word from the Mouthpiece of Gold
God doesn’t shout—He whispers. He doesn’t compete with our schedules—He waits. He doesn’t force us to listen—He invites us.
Today, the Holy Spirit is saying:
“Slow down. I’ve been trying to warn you.”
Let’s not be like those who covered their ears in Zechariah 7:11. Let’s be a people who listen, even when it’s inconvenient. Because your destiny is too precious to miss the warning signs along the way.
